Angled Shelters, John Burns School, Wandsworth, London

John Burns Primary school in Wandsworth, London.

As part of a funded sustainability improvement package the school have asked us to make a number of outdoor classrooms. The first two are 6x4m on plan with benches on three sides and are located on two unused roof spaces on opposite sides of the school. They offer covered outdoor learning and breakout spaces for the music room and another teaching space

Made from galvanised steel box section base frame and UK grown FSC Douglas Fir timber for all the rest of the structure with Sedum greenroof and SUDS planters [see below]. The Angled Shelters have been designed to be self supporting, enabling them to sit on the school roof or playground without fixing down.

The Sustainable Urban Drainage System planters take the runoff from the greenroof and have soil at the top and a water reservoir below with slow water release so they temporarily store the rainwater. They also have a permanent water storage tank at one end so the children can water the planting beds during dry weather.

The school experiences localised flooding so this is part of a number of interventions to try and reduce this. They are also installing a solar PV array on the roof.
