Roundhouse, West Park, Worthing

Our final public installation for 2023 took us to Worthing on the South Coast on a cold clear winters day. This is the second version of the green roofed roundhouse we have made, this one at 4m diameter was smaller than the last at 5m, but has the addition of a seat on three sides and cladding on two.

It was quite a trek across a very wet West Park park to the site and were glad to have the help of the Councils park team and a friends son to get all the components and green roof substrate and sedum turf to site. Then, as is the way working outside at this time of year, the main challenge is with the elements and the daylight. We where lucky with both and just finished as the sun set.

As usual the frame is all made from UK grown Douglas Fir, with mortise and tenoned draw doweled posts and braces and galvanised steel shoes into the ground. We used a no concrete groundworks approach and so the dug earth from the holes was just rammed back in. Next the parks team will sort out a base and path to the shelter.

This project was initiated by the local parish council, and facilitated by Maurice Pierce, so thanks goes to them.
