Conservatory Renovation

Like many conservatories across the land, this one was failing in its usefulness as an extra room. Too hot in summer and way to cold in winter. This was due to a huge expanse of old double glazing, solid tiled floor and cavity walls with little to no insulation!

So we took the hipped roof off and replaced it with a super insulated timber frame. We halved the roof glazing area and used triple glazed units for the new roof lights and added a greenroof to the lower half of the timber clad insulated roof. This is standard practice for us, the glazed section above, draining onto the planted area and increasing the available rainwater catchment for the greenroof to help it through dryer weather. We also added insulation to the floor and floated an oak floor over the top of this. We retained the existing windows and doors, as this would have doubled the project costs, but added insulation into the cavity and filled all the gaps, effectively giving the conservatory a super warm hat and pair of cozy boots.

To achieve the almost 7x5m open plan interior with a timber frame we had to make an interesting structure, with some big timbers and complex joints, all pulled together using oak pegs, below are some photos and videos of this process.
