Very happy to have made a Hammer-beam Truss. A complex, very satisfying and curvy way to span a space that has been used throughout the history of timber framing for some very impressive structures. Our tiny 5m span was an interesting challenge and test of our skills but it pales in comparison with some of those from the past.
Particularly the magnificent hammer-beam roof of Westminster Hall which is the largest medieval timber roof in Northern Europe. Measuring 20 by 73 metres , the roof was commissioned in 1393 by Richard II, and is a masterpiece of design, craftmanship and construction. 660 tonnes of oak lifted to over 28m in height, jointed and carved with amazing detail and then covered with 176 tonnes of lead.
