We recently replaced the main structural timber elements for a pentagon swing and zip line at High Hazels Park in Sheffield. The existing softwood timbers for both structures had been condemned by the playground safety inspectors and so the swings themselves removed. We where asked to carry out the work as it was complicated and involved working with large scale timbers. The swing timbers were not in too bad condition but the tops of the Zip Line timbers were very rotten, and at 4.6m high difficult to see. We were amazed to find that a bird had made a nest in the hollowed out top of one of the posts and they had since become a hotel to hundreds of ladybirds. We have put these bug houses in a safe place.
We used freshly sawn oak, so they should last for many years to come. This was a bit of a departure from our normal work and the Zip wire post replacements where very challenging – the new oak posts weighted 140 kg each to begin with. We hope to be able to support the playground repairs team with future repairs across the region.
